I’ve worked in film as a critic, lecturer and programmer for half a century. I was editor and chief critic of the film pages of Time Out for many years and head of programming for a decade and a half at BFI Southbank, formerly the National Film Theatre; I then continued as a senior member of the programming team until 2024. For much of the last decade I have been teaching and lecturing at the London Film School.

I’ve also written, edited and contributed to many books on the cinema. Here, I’ll be writing more informally about things that take my interest – things I hope might also interest you: not just films and film folk, but music (of various kinds) and the other arts.

If you want to check out my other writings, you can find my books on Amazon, my old reviews in the Time Out Film Guide and on the Time Out Film website, and other articles and essays in Sight & Sound and numerous anthologies. There are also the many blogs I wrote for the BFI website.

You will find a list of my books and articles in Publications, and a list of the lectures I have given in Events. See menu.
